Henley on Thames to Maidenhead - Day 8

Well we are off again after completing more than 100 miles and enjoying a much needed day of rest!
As we were leaving Henley, we walked by the famous Henley Regatta race course.  The event took place last week so they were still taking down tents and stands.  Across the river we could see the boathouses and press stands where the race started.

Along the race course we could see a number of the old, stately mansions along the river.

The clubhouse for the prestigious Remenham Rowing Club, also along the banks of the racecourse.

Finally, Temple Island where the race ends as the sailors round it and head back to the end of the course.   This was probably the straightest stretch of river we had seen since we came from the Source and the cool winds blowing on us made it clear why it is such a good racecourse.  We had to bundle up however, as it was the coolest day we've had so far.

Idyllic life along the river.

Through out our walk along the Thames, we cross through many parcels of private property which have granted public right of way for National Trails.  The next couple of pictures show a beautiful estate complete with art and a private deer reserve.  The estate was apparently bought by an investment magnate as a wedding gift for his daughter for 17 million pounds, then sold 5 years later to a swiss investor for 37 million.

The deer, interestingly almost white in color with antlers that looked more like moose. . . . clearly not too afraid of the foreign heard of walkers!

Once we pass through this very large parcel of land, we are back on the river and on our way to Maidenhead.

A riverside church just on the outskirts of Marlow...just past the half way mark today!

We'd love to own this one!!!!

Below are a few pictures of the town of Marlow....we take a quick trip in to find a pub, do a bit of shopping and grab a coffee to go.  Below you can see the picturesque suspension bridge over the Thames coming into Marlow.

s
Still coming into Marlow.

These were unique and cute when we first saw them a week ago.  Now they just crap on our path!

Another old railway bridge on our way through the town of Cookham, where we met some of Shelagh's relatives for a tea and pint of beer before moving on to our destination at Taplow House across the river from Maidenhead.

Our destination for the night, Taplow House.  Tonight, Shelagh's relatives would join us for dinner at a nice Indian restaurant in a small town outside of Maidenhead.  Julien and Helen also drove up to join us from Henley.  It was a great curry evening at the restaurant with good, spicy food to fortify us for tomorrow, the longest day of our journey.

And the stats for today......18 miles and 42,000 steps.
